Creator and editor

My name is Stan Turner. I am a software developer with five years of web-development experience. I am not an ornithologist and do not present myself as a bird expert. My role is building the website, processing its data and presenting sources in a verifiable way.

Why this site exists

Open nature data is valuable, but it is often spread across large datasets and specialist systems. I wanted to turn that information into useful pages: where a species has historically been reported, which months stand out and which areas have enough data for a meaningful comparison.

What I do

• Website development, hosting and technical maintenance
• Importing, spatially processing and aggregating GBIF data
• Checking source attribution, internal links and publication thresholds
• Editorial review of guides and handling reported corrections

Data and limitations

Observation counts come from GBIF and are linked to defined Dutch birding areas. They are historical observation records, not a live prediction and not automatically counts of individual birds. Popular sites, frequently reported species and differences between datasets can influence the pattern.

Editorial process

Data pages are generated from controlled database fields. Identification guides, thematic articles and ranked guides also receive editorial review. Bird-related claims are checked against named sources such as Vogelbescherming, Sovon, Wikipedia or other identifiable publications. Uncertain claims are qualified or not published.

Corrections and contact

A reported error is checked against the underlying data or cited source. If the report is correct, I update the data, text or processing. When reporting an issue, include the URL and explain as precisely as possible what is wrong.
